Genesis 19: 16 – But He (Lot) hesitated. So the men seized his hand and the hand of his wife and the hands of his two daughters, for the compassion of the Lord was upon him; and they brought him out, and put him outside the city.
I’ve been chewing on this scripture for a couple of weeks now and the more I think about it the more I see Gods compassion towards those he loves. In Genesis 18 Abraham had ‘bargained’ with the Lord as God had told him his plans to destroy Sodom, the place where his nephew Lot and his family had just relocated to. In Genesis 19 Lot was able to see first hand the type of evil that was running rampant in Sodom when the two angels came to warn him, yet in verse 19 we are told that Lot hesitated, dragged his feet, was slow…why would he be hesitant to leave such a place? I’m sure if it was me I would have rounded up my family and let sharply, however Lot didn’t have a sense of urgency or fear.
This verse goes to show the condition of our hearts, we know that God has a beautiful plan for our lives and that he is calling us out of darkness into his marvellous light, yet we still look back longingly at our sin or we hesitate and question our faith in God. Yet regardless of this God still had compassion on Lot and his entire family because of the bargaining that went on between him and Abraham.
This goes to show us that in spite of us Gods plans still stands , despite our disobedience and unfaithfulness he remains faithful – God never goes back on his word and his promises are always fulfilled. Note that Lot did not disobey God neither did he doubt him, he was just more accustomed to the sin around him but God showed him mercy by literally taking Lot and each of his family members by the hand and leading them to safety. We know the rest of the story that Lots wife looked back despite being told not to – she outrightly disobeyed. I often wondered why God led her to safety if she was going to look back, but then I remembered the promise God made to Abraham.
How amazing is it to know that God will take us by the hand and lead us to safety, He will do this because we are his children and there are so many promises yet to be fulfilled in our lives. The word tells us that his word will not return void. So rejoice and have faith in him x
